I live in what can be described as a “community” village, where it seems that everybody knows everybody else. Of course, this is not such a bad thing - for the most part, all of the neighbours seem pretty nice.
In the village, over the last few weeks, there has been a few different activities going on that from an outside point of view might seem weird and unneccesary. Firstly there was the scarecrow festival, in which most of the residents build a scarecrow and display it in their garden for a week in the middle of July.
The scarecrow fesitval is for charity, and lots of people travel from all over to look at the creations. Thats great, but it certainly spooks you out when you are normally travelling to and from work when its dark, and are greeted by large “people looking objects” in all kinds of weird positions.
Imagine my surprise then, to waking up on a saturday (can’t really say morning
) and walking downstairs wearing little more than a yawn, to see hundreds of people staring in on the garden (with the curtains open). Hmm, now that I think about it, that freaks me out a little more than the scarecrows themselves. I must point out though that usually the village is rather quiet and the only person walking down the street (any time of the day) is the postman!
After the scarecrow festival, and at the beginning of August, is the Music Festival. Yes really, a bona fide music festival, with tents and beer, and burgers. Everything except the mud.
I was really looking forward to this years festival, having been unable to make the one last year. I wanted to point out two fantastic bands - bear in mind that I am usually a big fan of Rock/Metal music.
Shamus O’Blivion & the Megadeth Morrismen : Having been very careful throughout my adult life to stay away from Morris music, this was extremly enlightening. What a fantastic band, and what a way they have with getting the crowd involved. I certainly enjoyed this much more than I let on at the time.
Handle With Care : Unfortunatly, I was unable to find a website for this band, which is a shame, because I would like to know when they are next playing in Leicester / Coalville. I’m sure my Dad would enjoy this band too. They played cover songs of the Rolling Stones, Thin Lizzy to name a few and the sound was amazing. I really enjoyed this set.
The Heather Music Festival website has more details and photgraphs of the bands that played.
What a very strange few weeks it has been. Really wish I had taken some photos.
